Wick Intern Receives Maggie Anderson Award for Travel

Posted Jan. 13, 2012
Natasha Rodriguez-CarrollNatasha Rodriguez-Carroll, a KSU senior and Wick intern, has been named the recipient of the Maggie Anderson Endowment Fund award. The fund aims to assist talented writing students at Kent State with writing-related travel expenses. Rodriguez-Carroll will use the funding to travel to Puerto Rico in June 2012; it will be her first trip to the island.

The trip will have special significance for Rodriguez-Carroll since it is her ancestral home. She notes that much of her poetry is influenced by her Latino heritage and focuses on family. In an essay, she writes, “Although I proudly identify as Puertorrican, I have always felt disconnected from my heritage simply because I never had the opportunity to visit my homeland.

Rodriguez-Carroll says she feels lucky and grateful for the travel opportunity. “It is my hope that by planting my feet firmly on the soil of my ancestors and having the opportunity to explore my heritage, even for a short while, I will finally feel free to write the story of my family and my own life with authenticity and without fear of the unknown,” she writes.
