Design Abroad in Berlin and Prague (Spring 2013)
Design Abroad is a 12-day learning adventure abroad, built into the Graphic Design 2 and Graphic Design Field Experience courses in the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University. The trip began in Berlin, a city that is the birthplace for modern design aesthetic and theory, home to the Bauhaus and many influential designers, and ended in Prague. The students visited an array of museums, landmarks and monuments that not only provided subject matter and content, but also context, inspiration and reflection on the birthplace of modern design. They explored the many changes and transformations Berlin has endured over the last century.
In the second week, the group traveled to Prague, a city that is immensely different, but only a short 175 miles away. Prague is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is an amazing site, as the medieval city center is virtually intact following World War II.
The course met weekly during the semester, before and after the trip (which fell partially during Spring Break). Students completed a variety of reading assignments and activities to prepare for the trip. After returning to Kent, students finished the studio project, and presented their work to the class.
