Carnegie Classification — Ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement  for Teaching among the nation’s top 74 public high-research universities.

Cartwright Hall — formerly the Auditorium Building.

catalog — the preferred spelling ends with -log, not -logue.

Centennial Research Park — use this form.

centers and institutes — see under names of.

chairperson or chair — use chairperson or chair in references to heads of Kent State departments and committees. Exceptions may occur when referring historically to individuals who chaired departments or committees in the past when the traditional forms, chairman or chairwoman, were used. When referring to individuals outside Kent State, use their preferred titles.

child care — two words in all cases.

Child Development Center — spell out in full and capitalize for the first reference; use center for subsequent references.

cocurricular — no hyphen.

Columbiana County campuses — another way to refer to Kent State University at East Liverpool and Kent State University at Salem.

Commencement — always capitalize when referring to the Kent State University event. In August 2011 Kent State University observed its two hundred thirty-ninth Commencement. The custom of wearing robes at commencement exercises dates back to the 11th century.

Convocation — always capitalize when referring to the Kent State University event. Each fall the Kent State University Convocation is held to welcome new freshmen and their guests. A convocation is an assemblage or calling together.

course listings — list either by the format in the Schedule of Classes or the complete title of the course.

ANTH 18210 or Introduction to Cultural Anthropology.

coursework — one word.

credit hours — use numerals; 3-credit-hour course; ART 52036, Medieval Art (3); 3 credits are needed for graduation.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park — use this form.

day care — two words when used a noun; hyphenated when used as an adjective.

Deans Council — no apostrophe.

Dean’s List — always capitalize and use the apostrophe.

degree audit — use this form.

degree plan — use this form.

departments — see under names of.

Distinguished Teaching Award — see Kent State University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award.

Divisions — see under names of.
