Graduate assistantships involve 20 hours of work in the department each week. The 20 hours may be divided between research and teaching, or all 20 hours may be in either teaching or research. Preferences will be taken into account your for this assignment. The teaching assistant's (TA's) work typically involves helping a faculty member advise students (e.g., holding office hours) and grading exams. Teaching assistantships may also involve help with administrative tasks, such as keeping track of grades. The research assistantship (RA) may require assisting a faculty member with research tasks, such as running experiments, coding data, or with simple administrative tasks such as getting research materials from the library.
Students may apply for a Graduate Assistantship (if desired) as part of the application process.
Graduate assistants must maintain full-time student status (8 graduate hours minimum) and be in good academic standing (see Graduate Handbook on the Graduate Student Forms and Docs page for details).
Graduate assistants may not accept any other employment on campus without prior approval from the department and Graduate Studies Office.
First-time graduate assistants must attend and successfully complete the university's Graduate Student Orientation (GSO), a workshop held the week prior to the beginning of the Fall semester. For attending, graduate assistants receive a $500.00 advance from the stipend at the end of the orientation program. The remainder of the stipend will be paid in equal installments semimonthly. Failure to attend all sessions will result in the forfeiture of the $500.00 advance.
For all International students: The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires Kent State University to make this offer contingent upon proof of work authorization. This will be verified during the Graduate Student Orientation mentioned above. Absent such verification, no appointment can be awarded.
