KUPITA TRANSICIÓNES 2014 PROGRAM REGISTRATION

Kupita Transiciónes is a three-day orientation program for newly admitted African American, Latino American and Native American students. Yearly, Kupita/Transiciónes has participants from various cultures, areas and experiences.  The program is designed to help students successfully navigate the beginning of their college career by focusing on the academic, cultural and social climate of Kent State University. 



Kupita Transiciónes has a significant role in assisting with students' overall growth and development.  It gives first year students an opportunity to:

  • Meet upper-class Peer Mentors, faculty, staff and alumni
  • Create connections with classmates and fellow future graduates
  • Learn about academic programs, multicultural student organizations and critical resources to maximize their success

Kupita/Transiciónes 2014 will be held Monday, August 18-Thursday, August 21, 2014. Participation in the program is FREE and voluntary.  In addition, students participating in the program will be able to move in early on Monday, August 18th.   Registration for the program is limited to 200 students. Register early!

   Q. What is the Kuita/Transiciónes Program?

The Kupita/Transiciónes Program is a three-day orientation program that will run August 18 - August 21. The program is designed to address and impact transitional issues and challenges experienced by students of color through culturally relevant and academic workshops and activities. Students living on campus will move in onAugust 18th.

Q. Is there a charge for the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

There is no charge to participate in the program participation in program is voluntary and free; however registration is required.

Q. Will there be any staff around to answer my questions?

There will be several Kupita/Transiciónes Program staff members and volunteers on campus to answer any question you may have. Peer Mentors will be with you throughout the program.

Q. Will offices be open during the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

If you still have a few business items to take care of before school starts, university offices will be open during regular business hours. Please see a staff member or Peer Mentor with questions.

Q. If I participate in the Kupita/Transiciónes Program do I have to participate in Welcome Weekend?

Yes, participation in Welcome Weekend is required of all incoming freshmen students more information will be provided upon arrival.

Q. Is my participation in the Kupita/Transiciónes Program required?

Participation in the Kupita/Transiciónes Program is voluntary. However, we strongly encourage your participation. The program provides a unique opportunity to meet other students and become acquainted with the campus prior to the start of school.

Q. Are families able to attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

Families are not required to attend Kupita/Transiciónes events. However, there are a few activities scheduled for families on Monday, August 18th, including the Opening Ceremony.

Q. As a commuter, can I attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

Commuter and off-campus students are encouraged to attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program. We are, however, very conscious that commuter students will need to drive to campus each day to participate in the activities. The activities are scheduled so that it will be easy for you to attend.

Q. Do I need to register to attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

Yes. Refer to the email and letter you received in the mail regarding registration or click on the link above.

Q. How many programs/events am I required to attend?

Students are required to attend all events.

Q. What if I cannot attend (at all, or certain events) during the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

It is required that if you register to participate in the program that you attend all events. It is important that you have an opportunity before the semester begins to learn what is expected, how to be successful, and what resources are available. Please contact the Student Multicultural Center at 330-672-3560 if you have additional questions regarding this requirement.

Q. I took summer classes; do I still need to attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

It is highly suggested that you attend. The summer experience is totally different from what will occur during the fall. It is important that you have a chance to learn more about the changes and expectations before the semester begins.

Q. Are transfer students required to attend the Kupita/Transiciónes Program?

It is highly recommended that transfer students attend. Although you may already have the experience of being a college student under your belt, what Kent State has to offer will be totally new and unfamiliar.

Q. Will I be able to eat on campus? Will I have to use my meal plan?

The Student Multicultural Center will cover the cost of meals for participants from Monday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 20th

Q. When will I move into my Residence Hall room?

All new students will move on campus on Monday, August 18 between 8:30a.m. – 11:00a.m.

Students will move in to their assigned room based on information they received from Residence Services.

Q. Will I have to pay to stay in my room during Kupita/Transiciónes?  

The Student Multicultural Center will pay the early move-in charge for all new students to move into their rooms on Monday, August 18. Do not contact Residence Service regarding your moving in.

Q. Will there be people to help me move my things into my room?

Yes!

Q. Where do I check in?

Incoming students will arrive on Monday, August 18th between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Students will check in at his or her area desk
