UXD Master of Science

The delivery of Kent State UXD's program is designed for people who have busy lives. Family and work can make relocation for a master’s program impossible. We respect that, and in order for the program to work with your busy lives, we have designed it with the following features:

  • You can focus on one course at a time but still take two courses per semester.
  • These are standard, but compressed, 3-credit hour courses.
  • It is a 36-hour degree (12 courses) program that can be completed in two years.
  • We admit students three times per year: fall, spring, and summer.

With those points in mind, you must complete the following course requirements and a Culminating Experience (total of 36 hours) to earn your MS:

1. Course Requirements

  • Core/Introductory (6 Credits)
  • Carousel/Specialist (27 Credits)

2. Culminating Experience/Project (3 Credits)

Course Requirements

There are two types of courses in the UXD concentration:

  • Core/Introductory (6 Credits)
  • Carousel/Specialist (27 Credits)

The Core/Introductory courses introduce students to the discipline of UXD, design thinking, sketching as way to generate and communicate ideas, design deliverables, and portfolio creation. They also introduce students to the key aspects of the curriculum that will allow students and instructors to delve more deeply into each aspect of UXD in Carousel/Specialist courses. The Core/Introductory courses are offered every semester, and consist of the following two courses:

  • IAKM 60120: User Experience Design Principles and Concepts (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60121: User Experience Design in Practice (3 Credits)

Carousel/Specialist courses allow students to explore deeply the ideas and practice of each facet of UXD. There are ten of these courses and students take them after they take the Core/Introductory courses. The order in which these courses are taken is dependent on when these courses are offered. In other words, this is not necessarily the order in which you will take these courses.

  • IAKM 60105: Information Technologies (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60002: Knowledge Organization Systems (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60104: Usability I (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60114: Usability II (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60101: Information Architecture I (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60112: Information Architecture II (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60106: Content Strategy I (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60116: Content Strategy II (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60103: Researching the User Experience I (3 Credits)
  • IAKM 60113: Researching the User Experience II (3 Credits)

If you are an incoming student, students will take the Core/Introductory courses in their first semester. In the semester following the one in which you take the Core/Introductory courses, students will take whatever Carousel/Specialist courses are offered, and you’ll continue to do so until you have taken all ten of the Carousel/Specialist courses.

Culminating Experience Requirement

The Culminating Experience is taken during the last semester of coursework. That is, during students’ last semester in the program, they will take a Culminating Experience course (3 credits) in place of one of the two Carousel/Specialist courses on the schedule for that semester.

Information about the Culminating Experience can be found here:

•    Master’s Project Handbook
•    Master’s Project Approval Form

Curriculum Offerings by Semester Students Begin Program

The following tables show students’ entire curriculum by starting semester in the program. We do, however, reserve the right to eliminate and substitute courses if we, as a faculty, determine that courses are no longer relevant, or that alternate courses are more relevant based on our analysis of the User Experience Design field
