FCOI Training

New Public Health Service (PHS) Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) regulations and Kent State University’s related policy on financial interest in sponsored projects, require all PHS-funded investigators to complete FCOI training prior to the expenditure of funds for any newly-funded projects, including noncompeting continuation awards.  In order to maintain compliance with this requirement Kent State has developed an online training program through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) site.

This training must be completed by the principal investigator, as well as any other individuals who are independently responsible for the design, conduct or reporting of research (regardless of title or position) for PHS (NIH, CDC, HRSA, AHRQ, SAMHSA, Medicare) funded research, including PHS funded subawards and any other agencies that have adopted the PHS FCOI regulations.

To avoid delays with any awards, sponsored programs encourages investigators who apply for PHS funding (including NIH) to complete the training as soon as possible.  Training only needs to be completed once every four years (unless there is a change in policy or procedures), and compliance will be monitored for Kent State personnel.  The training can be reached at  A guide to enrolling and getting started on the FCOI training is available if needed.
