Kent State University seeks a dynamic, innovative, and motivated individual to serve as Dean of its exceptional College of Arts and Sciences. Kent State, ranked among the top 80 public research universities by the Carnegie Foundation, and among the top 200 universities globally by Times Higher Education, enrolls 42,000 students across its eight-campus system and 28,000 students on the Kent campus. The beneficiary of a recent beautification project that ties the campus to downtown Kent, the university is now embarking on a transformational $200 million construction campaign. Kent faculty, staff and students enjoy small town living, excellent schools, the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as well as the amenities of nearby Cleveland and its suburbs.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the College, significant senior leadership experience in higher education, an academic record sufficient to qualify for faculty appointment at senior rank, and a strong understanding of research, scholarship and instruction. Preference will be given to those with experience in academic administration; an understanding of, respect for, and appreciation of the ideals, values and heritage of a large, public university; the ability to articulate a common and compelling vision for the College and to establish clear goals for the future; and the talent to deploy resources in order to achieve strategic ends. In addition, the successful candidate will have a passion for the academic environment with an understanding of its unique constituencies together with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student learning and faculty scholarship. The next Dean will display outstanding external relations skills, including the ability to raise philanthropic resources and to build and maintain strong relationships with businesses and industry, other research institutions, and the community. A deep knowledge of current trends and emerging issues in higher education, high ethical standards, and a strong commitment to diversity are required.
The College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University is a dynamic university within a university, offering 45 baccalaureate, 35 masters, and 37 doctoral degree programs through 350 outstanding full-time faculty in 16 academic departments and several centers and institutes. At the heart of the College of Arts and Sciences is the dedicated faculty who conduct original research, and who teach students in the classroom, in the laboratory, and in the community the skills, values, and wisdom of a liberal arts education. The programs in the College encompass humanities, social sciences, natural, physical, and mathematical sciences that are increasingly interwoven into mosaics of the liberal arts and sciences. The College provides the foundational coursework for students throughout the university and attracts many of the best and brightest students. Four associate deans, the advising office, and 18 chairs and/or directors report to the Dean. The Dean administers a budget of approximately $116 million.
