Message from the Presidential Search Committee – Oct. 3, 2013Posted Oct. 3, 2013
Our search for the 12th president of Kent State now is about one month into national advertising and recruitment of prospective candidates. The Search Committee met September 30 and I’m pleased to provide this update on our activities to the university community.
The committee has retained the executive search firm of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, which is reaching out to leaders of the nation’s top universities and other organizations. At our meeting the search firm described its ongoing, aggressive efforts to recruit diverse candidates, including women and other under-represented and underserved groups, to ensure a diverse and highly qualified candidate pool.
We are gratified that our search consultants are reporting positive feedback from the marketplace. We’re early in our process, but there is broad recognition of Kent State as an institution “on the move.” Higher education leaders regard Kent State as making major strides and regard it as an attractive opportunity. Among its positive attributes, KSU is seen as having positive momentum, strong performance in terms of student achievement and financial condition, and a uniquely positioned eight-campus structure. Reaction to the Presidential Prospectus also has been favorable, with comments indicating that the document conveys Kent State’s strong, positive energy to the marketplace.
Members of the search committee have participated in a number of consultations with various segments of the university community to seek feedback on the desired qualifications of our next president. We’ve also sought broad input through open forums, an online survey, and email to the committee. These sources have helped us in drafting the Presidential Prospectus and continue to inform our thinking.
What we heard, resoundingly, is that we collectively possess a strong commitment to Kent State and an urgent desire to continue its positive momentum. The discussions all expressed the need for a continued strong focus on academic excellence and support of the university’s research mission.
