Administrative policy on mandatory immunization/ screening of students

(A)       Introduction. This policy is established as a health, safety, and caring practice for the entire university community. Immunization of students will decrease the chances of possible infectious outbreaks that can jeopardize the university community's health and well being.


(B)       Guidelines.


(1)       Undergraduate and graduate students.


(a)       All students enrolling for their first semester of credit classes, at the Kent campus, and are born after January 1, 1957, are required to provide documentation of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, and freedom of tuberculosis as appropriately determined by a registered physician or health care provider.


(b)       “Student” is defined as any person who is enrolled for one or more credit hours at the university and who is physically present on the Kent campus.


(c)        Students are mandated to submit documentation from the registered physician or health care provider of all the previously mentioned immunization and freedom of tuberculosis results to university health services by Friday of the fourth week of a students' first semester of credit classes.


(C)       Policy exemptions.


(1)       Any student that is born before January 1, 1957, is exempt from the MMR vaccination, however, it is required that a student has a current tuberculosis screening (within eight months) of their first enrolled class credit.


(2)       Any student that has been previously enrolled, for at least one credit hour, before 1996 fall semester, is exempt from the student immunization/screening policy.


(3)       Any student that is enrolled for classes at any of the regional Kent state university campuses, or a site other than Kent campus, or attending workshops that meet for two weeks or less in duration located on or off the Kent campus are exempt from the student immunization/screening policy.


(4)       Medical exemption is granted with a physician's or health care provider's signature of the medical exemption section of the student immunization/screening form or provide a written, signed document stating that the student is medically contraindicated to receive the required immunization or screening.


(5)       Religious exemption is granted if a student aged eighteen or older (or parent/guardian if student is under eighteen years of age), signs the religious exemption section of the student immunization/screening form.


(D)       Failure to comply. Students who do not show documentation of the required immunizations and screening by the end of the fourth week of the student's first semester of classes, at the Kent campus, will be deregistered from classes for the remainder of that semester.
