Basic Service Scholarship

A teaching and learning strategy using course objectives and service to develop students’ skills in information gathering, data entry, and/or data management leading to new knowledge and insight.

Example: A learning objective for students enrolled in a 2000 level Chemistry course is to gain an understanding of how fundamental chemical concepts can be used to address current problems of relevance in the world. To facilitate this understanding, students will assist the local EPA collect air quality samples within a community concerned about contamination from the local refuse facility. The students will record and submit data to the EPA for analysis.

Applied Service Scholarship

A teaching and learning strategy using engaged service-learning, community information gathering, critical analysis and community collaborations to develop objective plans for civic solutions.

Example: : A learning objective for students enrolled in a Health Behavior course is to understand factors influencing negative health behaviors. To facilitate this, students serve Happy Trails Animal Sanctuary to assist the organization in gaining a better understanding of the relationship between domestic violence and animal abuse. Students use a theory of health behavior to develop an “intake form” to capture background information and a history of abuse in associated families. The students use the “intake form” while serving Happy Trails as intake workers. Finally, the students compile and analyze the data, and submit a written report to the director. Subsequently, information from the report is used to increase public awareness, develop educational strategies targeting the local community, and explore policy implications.
