College Seeks Partners to Expand Research Co-op Program; Matching Dollars Available through State Grant

Thanks to a new grant program from the Ohio Board of Regents, the college is creating a graduate student co-op program with local organizations in need of health research assistance.  Partners will utilize master’s or doctoral students for 20 hours weekly for a period of at least one year, while students continue their academic programs.  The Ohio Means Internships & Co-ops Program contributes to the cost of this co-op arrangement.  
 
The state is investing $11 million over the next two years in co-ops and internships, with matching dollars directed to key industry sectors and functions, including biohealth and research and development.  Some 25 education partners, including Kent State, are creating new or expanded programs to help build skills in demand by Ohio businesses and to better position students for jobs in Ohio after graduation, according to the Board of Regents.
 
“If you’re looking for assistance with health policy, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, product development or health-related R&D, we have well-educated and skilled graduate students ready to help where you need talent to solve problems,” says Director of Advancement Margot McGimpsey, who is working with local organizations to forge the co-op partnerships with the college.
 
The co-op researchers are employed by Kent State, with student support funded equally by the new grant program and the local partner organization.  Co-ops are based at the partner’s facilities, and supervision is shared between the co-op partner and college faculty.
 
Jobs are starting this summer.  Already seven co-op positions have been created in partnership with four leading local organizations, including Akron General Medical Center, AxessPointe Community Health Services, GOJO Industries, Inc., and Summa Health System.  Organizations interested in utilizing a co-op student should contact McGimpsey at (330) 672-6270.
 
The grants are part of a workforce development strategy to align Ohio’s higher education curriculum with skills in demand from Ohio’s businesses.  The grants will provide Ohio employers with opportunities to benefit from the talents of Ohio’s graduate students, while putting students on track for successful careers in Ohio.  Funding provided through the Ohio Means Internships & Co-op Program comes from Ohio-based casino license fees.
