Alyssa Gwirtz Helps to "Rebuild Together New Orleans"Posted Apr. 11, 2011
Gwirtz assisted Rebuilding Together New Orleans, an organization that helps to rebuild homes for low-income families in the city that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. This organization strives to provide revitalization to New Orleans’ neighborhoods.
Gwirtz said that throughout this experience, she “gained great compassion and knowledge.” When she saw the joy and gratitude on the homeowner’s face, it made the whole experience “even more rewarding.” Gwirtz believes she truly made a difference in the life of the homeowner, Sarah. Sarah’s home had been under eight feet of water when the storm hit, and her face lit up when she saw how far her home had come along.
Alyssa believes the experience gave her more knowledge pertaining to construction. She had never renovated a home before. She said she made sure they salvaged as much wood and other materials as possible as they re-framed and sided the home. In addition to gaining experience outside of the classroom that will help her stand out from others in her field of construction management, Gwirtz also learned that “one person can really make a difference in another’s life.”
