MEDIA ADVISORY/PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
TUESDAY, AUG. 10 @ 11:30 A.M.
Kent State to Bury Time Capsule as Part of University’s Centennial Celebration
Time Capsule to Go Underground Until 2060
As part of Kent State University’s Centennial celebration this year, the university will hold a dedication ceremony to bury the Centennial Time Capsule on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 11:30 a.m. at Risman Plaza (the plaza in front of the Kent Student Center). Kent State President Lester A. Lefton will read a proclamation and share a few remarks about the 2010 time capsule. The sealed capsule will then be buried under Risman Plaza, near the Kent Student Center Kiva.
Somewhere on Kent State’s campus is a 1960 time capsule bearing the memories and stories of yesteryear just waiting to be uncovered — at least that's what some say. While Kent State continues to search for the old time capsule, the university prepares to bury the Centennial Celebration time capsule, which will be opened in 2060.
Members of the media are encouraged to attend and help document the 2010 time capsule’s burial so it can be easily found in 50 years. Members of the media also will have the opportunity to:
• Learn about the 2010 time capsule and its contents
• Interview Kent State President Lefton and Pamela Jones, academic program and student development coordinator and a member of Kent State’s Centennial Committee who led the Centennial Time Capsule project
• Capture interesting visuals, including:
o University officials gathering around the time capsule
o Kent State President Lefton lowering the capsule into the ground via a John Deere track hoe
• See the construction progress of the student center plaza which is undergoing a facelift and is part of Kent State’s campuswide $200 million renovation plan
