Kent State Celebrates Being Named the Nation’s 2nd Designated Training Facility

Kent State Celebrates Being Named the Nation’s 2nd Designated Training Facility to Prepare Biosafety and Biocontainment Professionals

Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton will be joined by Dr. Deborah Wilson of the National Institutes of Health, former Ohio Congressman Ralph Regula, community and business leaders, university officials and other guests to celebrate Kent State being named the nation’s second Designated Training Facility of the National Institutes of Health’s National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP). Kent State’s Biosafety Training Lab becomes a continuing education training site for the NBBTP, providing the latest in professional education to those who operate, maintain and work in biocontainment laboratories.

Members of the media are invited to attend and:

  • Learn about how Kent State is preparing biosafety and biocontainment professionals to meet the needs of the biomedical, emerging disease and civilian biodefense research communities
  • Interview program speakers, including:
  • Kent State President Lester A. Lefton
  • Former Ohio Congressman Ralph Regula
  • Dr. Deborah Wilson, director of the Division of Occupational Health and Safety at the National Institutes of Health
  • Dr. Murray L. Cohen, president and chairman of Frontline Healthcare Workers Safety Foundation, Ltd., which administers the NBBTP
  • Dr. Christopher Woolverton, Kent State professor of Public Health and director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness
  • Capture interesting visuals, including:
  • Students in hazardous materials suits handing out programs and welcoming guests
  • The unveiling of the plaque certifying Kent State’s Designated Training Facility status
  • Tour the university’s Biosafety Training Lab in nearby Cunningham Hall
