Posted Aug, 9, 2010

Summa Health System and Kent State University are pleased to announce their new partnership to provide Kent State student-athletes with the best in sports health medicine.

Beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year, physicians from the Summa Center for Sports Health will provide medical care to Kent State student-athletes in all varsity sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.  Among their many responsibilities, the physicians will perform daily injury checks, provide consultations and attend home events.

“We are proud to be the team physicians for Kent State’s outstanding athletics program,” said Nilesh Shah, M.D., medical director of the Summa Center for Sports Health.  “Keeping the student-athletes safe, healthy and in peak condition is our number one priority.  And we’ll achieve that by providing each person with comprehensive care – everything from sports health education to injury prevention to treatment and rehabilitation.”

The team physicians include Nilesh Shah, M.D., Tom Bartsokas, M.D., James Goff, D.O., and sports medicine fellow Robert Crawford, M.D.  Dr. Bartsokas also is the medical director for the Kent State Athletic Training Education Program.

“We are very excited about this new partnership with the Summa Center for Sports Health and the opportunities it will provide Kent State student-athletes,” said Trent Stratton, Kent State’s director of sports medicine.  “We are eager to work with some of the best physicians and specialists in Ohio to help our student-athletes compete at the highest level. The personal and professional experiences that the physicians can share with our athletes are immeasurable.”

Kent State Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen added, “We’re committed to providing our student-athletes with the best healthcare possible and we feel this partnership with Summa does just that.  The quality of the physicians and access to a first-class facility like the Summa Center for Sports Health is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

The Kent State team physicians from Summa also are the team physicians for the Akron Aeros as well as medical directors and medical team members for the Road Runner Akron Marathon and the LeBron James King for Kids Bike-a-thon.  Additionally, the Summa Center for Sports Health provides athletic training services to 17 area high schools in three counties.
