Governor Appoints New TrusteesPosted Jun, 28, 2010
Gov. Ted Strickland has appointed two new people to serve on the Board of Trustees of Kent State University. Joining the Board are Margot James Copeland of Cleveland and Kent State student Brady Ruffer of Stryker, Ohio.
Kent State’s Board is composed of 11 members who are appointed by the governor of the state of Ohio, with the advice and consent of the state senate. Trustees, with the exception of two student trustees, are appointed to nine-year terms of office. Ruffer, who will serve with another student trustee, is appointed to a two-year term as a nonvoting member of the Board.
Copeland currently serves as the executive vice president for KeyCorp. She serves as the chair of the KeyBank Foundation, guiding the company's strategic philanthropic investments. Previously, Copeland served as the president and chief executive officer of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable and the executive director of Leadership Cleveland. She also currently serves as trustee of the Thomas White Foundation; Kenneth Scott Foundation; the Great Lakes Museum of Science, Environment and Technology; and University Hospitals Health System. Copeland received a bachelor’s degree from Hampton University and a master’s degree from The Ohio State University.
Ruffer is currently an undergraduate student studying social studies education at Kent State. He serves as a trainer and student leader for Kent State’s Student Success Program and as a member of student government. Ruffer is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He is expected to complete his studies in 2012.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of Kent State. By Ohio law, the Board is responsible for selecting and appointing the president; setting the operating budget; approving personnel appointments; granting all degrees awarded by the university, including honorary degrees; establishing tuition and fee rates; approving contracts; and approving all rules, regulations, curriculum changes, new programs and degrees of the university.
