Douglas Steidl Named New Dean of the College of ArchitecturePosted May, 7, 2010
Douglas L. Steidl, FAIA, of Peninsula, Ohio, will become dean of Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, effective July 1, announced Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert G. Frank. Steidl replaces James Dalton, who will return to a faculty position following the completion of a two-year appointment as dean of the college.
“Mr. Steidl’s leadership, experience in the field of architecture, knowledge of accreditation and practice experience will provide our college with an extraordinary opportunity to develop our students, curriculum and research during his tenure as dean,” Frank said.
Steidl was a founding partner of Braun & Steidl Architects in Akron, Ohio, a position he held from 1983 to 2007, where he was responsible for design and business management of a 50-person firm specializing in educational, religious, recreational and hospitality projects. During his time with the firm, Braun & Steidl Architects complete more than 2,000 projects in 32 states and provinces.
His career also includes working at John David Jones & Associates in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, as designer, project manager and director of architecture; the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps as lieutenant, assistant resident officer in charge of construction at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, Fla.; Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority in Pittsburgh as planner; and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron as production support and later draftsman in the engineering department.
For the past three years, Steidl has served as manager of Renard, LLC in Peninsula, an investment, development and consulting company. From 1986 to 2009, he also served as president of Barder Development, a real estate development and holding company in Akron.
Steidl is active with many professional organizations. He currently serves as co-director and secretary of the professional practice commission of the International Union of Architects (UIA). In 2009, he was president of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). He held the position of president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2005. He also served as president of AIA Ohio in 1995 and AIA Akron in 1989.
Steidl holds a bachelor of architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a distinguished naval graduate of the Naval Officer Candidate School of the U.S. Navy in Newport, R.I., and a distinguished graduate of the Naval Civil Engineer Corps Officers School in Port Hueneme, Calif.
Kent State’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the only architectural program in Northeast Ohio, provides students with a comprehensive education for practice in the field and also serves as a major center for research. The university’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative combines the outreach efforts of the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio with the college’s graduate studies program in urban design.
