Kent State Public Relations Students Launch U.S. Census Campaign

Team to educate, motivate students and residents about 2010 Census benefits

The Kent State chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Bateman team will launch its campaign for the 2010 U.S. Census this Wednesday, Feb. 10. The national Portrait of America Road Tour will stop at Kent State University from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Kent Student Center.

The national PRSSA Bateman competition encourages groups of public relations students to create and implement a public relations plan for a real-world client. The U.S. Census Bureau challenged teams across the country to help motivate their schools and communities to participate in the decennial census. 

“This project provides students with a valuable opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real-world communication challenge,” said Michele Ewing, a Kent State associate professor and faculty adviser for the project.

Kent State students have teamed up with the U.S. Census Bureau for the Portrait of America Road Tour, which features 13 vehicles traveling throughout the country. The tour is exhibiting at more than 800 events including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and the NCAA Final Four. At the Kent State stop, attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the census and how it benefits Kent State and Kent communities through census-themed activities and information tables. Prizes and giveaways also will be featured.  Census Bureau employees will be available to assist students in applying for testing for temporary 2010 Census jobs, which pay from $8.25 to $19.25 per hour.

Throughout the campaign, students and residents will have the opportunity to sign a pledge stating they will participate in the 2010 Census.  Pledge forms will be available at all Bateman team events.  Pledges also can be made online through the team’s Facebook page. 

“We want to show that it doesn’t take long to fill out a form that can have a great impact on the future of the community,” said Stephanie Mathias, Bateman team member and junior public relations major.  “The new census forms are 10 questions and take only 10 minutes to complete.”

Every year, the federal government allocates more than $300 billion to states and communities based in part on census data.  Many college tuition grant and loan programs are affected by the accuracy of the census, and data also help determine locations and planning for new roads, schools, hospitals and retail outlets. 

 “City planning and school funding are examples of things dependent on accurate census data that also have the potential to impact college students and residents of college towns,” said U.S. Census Bureau Partnership Specialist Aundrey Somerville.
