On June 23, Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost visited Kent State University to discuss the Center’s work regarding intergovernmental.  After stopping to briefly visit with the College of Arts and Sciences Dean Timothy Moerland, he proceeded to the Kent Student Center to meet with local officials from Portage and Summit Counties to discuss how local entities are thinking and working collaboratively.

Representatives from Portage County, the City of Ravenna, the City of Tallmadge, Summit County Health District, and Kent State University shared their collaborative projects and experiences with Auditor Yost.  This cross section of entities discussed collaborations in the areas of public safety, economic development, public health, and technology among others—demonstrating the collaborative innovation that is currently happening in Northeast Ohio.
This summer, the Center released The Innovator’s Collaborative Series—a compilation of over 240 collaborative ideas and actions that are currently in the planning phase, or already being implemented in the Northeast Ohio region (see story on page I).  This inventory was shared with the Ohio Auditor of State’s office to help feed their work on a related project, The Shared Services Idea Center.

The financial cutbacks that Ohio’s state and local governments are facing have forced the public sector to explore alternative ways of doing business.  Intergovernmental collaboration is one solution to create efficient and effective government, while providing a cost savings and/or improved service delivery.  The Center has been researching intergovernmental collaborations for the past few years; sharing these reports and findings with Auditor Yost helps to expand Ohio’s understanding of the role collaboration plays in the continued improvement of the functions of government .
