President to Announce Help for Drastic Cut (7/23/09)

What: Kent State President Lester A. Lefton to announce help for neediest students.

When: Friday, July 24, 10 a.m.

Where: Kent State University Library – 2nd floor Study Lounge

In the face of a struggling Ohio and U.S. economy, the financial pressure on students has increased with the recent cuts in the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG). The typical Kent Campus student receiving OCOG funding will experience on average a 60 percent reduction of their grant for this summer, fall and spring semesters.  Regional campus students will lose the entire grant.  To help students bridge the gap, Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton is prepared to announce the university will assist students during this time of need.

President Lefton will be available to the press to answer questions about the affects of the recent state budget on universities and what Kent State is doing to assist students.

Access to additional financial aid is especially important for the many Ohio students whose families and communities are hard hit by the economic recession and the recent bankruptcies in the auto industry. Many Kent State students attending the university’s eight campuses are from counties that have directly experienced plant closings.
