Kent State Students Receive International Reporting Fellowships (6/02/2009)

Kent, Ohio (June 2, 2009) – The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting awarded $2,000 International Reporting Student Fellowships to two students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University to travel internationally to report on topics that are often neglected by American media sources.
Sonali Kudva, a graduate student studying journalism, will report from India this summer focusing on the privatization of water in Maharashtra.
“The control of water, who is to get it and its costs are all issues that I believe will soon become very important,” Kudva said.
Darren D’Altorio, a senior journalism major, will visit Ecuador in the fall to investigate the consequences of the local farming industry.
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is a non-profit organization that sponsors coverage of under-reported global issues. The Pulitzer Center functions as an independent division of the World Security Institute, itself a leader in the sponsorship of independent journalism and scholarship.
In order to apply for the fellowship, applicants must attend a Campus Consortium school. The Campus Consortium is a Pulitzer Center initiative aimed at enlisting college and university support to bring resources – and the journalists behind these international projects – to campuses across the country.
Students who sought fellowships from the Pulitzer Center submitted proposed project descriptions, anticipated travel dates and preliminary project budgets as well as work samples as part of the application process. Six students from four schools received 2009 fellowships.
The relationship between Kent State and the Pulitzer Center was established last year by JMC Associate Professor Barb Hipsman and JMC Assistant Professor Karl Idsvoog.
The College of Communication and Information helped to underwrite the program and will follow the students’ developing stories with updates on Facebook, Twitter and the college Web page at
