Participants Sought for Kent State's Homecoming Parade (08/07/2009)

Homecoming Parade 2008Planners for Kent State University’s 2009 Homecoming Parade are calling for entries from both campus and surrounding communities to help the university usher in its centennial celebration.

Everything from floats and cars to walking groups are encouraged to be part of this year’s parade, which carries the theme “A Century of Celebration” in honor of the 100th anniversary of Kent State’s founding.

“The parade offers an opportunity for members of the university and Kent community to come together for a fun celebration,” said Brenda McKenzie, parade committee co-chair.

The 1.7-mile parade begins at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10 with local marching bands, elected officials, fire trucks and student organizations already slated to participate.  Entries will be judged by a group of students, alumni and community officials, with first-place winners receiving a trophy.

Other Homecoming festivities that day include an alumni breakfast at the Williamson Alumni Center at 8 a.m., where a hospitality tent and bleachers will be set up to watch the parade.  The eighth annual Bowman Cup Race also steps off at 8 a.m. from the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. And the Golden Flashes take on the Bowling Green State University Falcons at 3:30 p.m. at Dix Stadium.
