Media Advisory: Black Squirrel Adventure Triathlon Set for Aug. 1 in Downtown Kent (07/30/2009)

The first annual Black Squirrel Adventure Triathlon.  The three-stage race includes canoeing/kayaking on the Cuyahoga River, running and biking and has two categories: flat water or white water.

The white water category will start at River Bend Park on the River Bend Boulevard and the flat water category will start at John Brown Tannery on Stow Street.  Registration and check-in for the event will take place at the Home Savings Plaza located at Main and South Water streets.

The City of Kent Parks and Recreation Department is organizing the event with assistance from Kent State University.

Race begins at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 1.

Same-day race registration occurs between 7-8 a.m.  Check-in begins at 8 a.m.

Participants are required to sign photo releases at the time of registration.  Photo opportunities will be available throughout the entire race.
David Herpy, recreation program coordinator at Kent State, says, “This is a fine example of the city and university working together for the members of our community. The Kent State Adventure Center, under the Department of Recreational Services, will support the paddling section of the race through canoe and kayak rentals as well as recommendations for river paddling safety, while the city of Kent organized the race.”

More than 100 participants are expected.   Participants may enter either individually, team or relay.  Proceeds from the event will benefit the Local Boy Scouts of America.

Following the race, individuals may enjoy live entertainment and refreshments at the Home Savings Plaza.
