Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton joined representatives from the city of Kent, Portage County, Congressman Tim Ryan’s office and other project partners for a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 9 celebrating the start of Fairmount Properties mixed-use portion of downtown Kent’s new $100 million redevelopment project.

Kent State University received Mark Kvamme, the newly installed interim chief investment officer and president of JobsOhio, on July 26. JobsOhio is the private economic development agency established by Gov. John Kasich and the Ohio legislature. Kvamme visited the university’s Centennial Research Park and three Portage County manufacturing firms that are all licensees of technology developed through research at Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute®.

Kent State University, Ohio’s second largest public university, is teaming up with Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s largest and most respected academic medical centers. Kent State has become the latest institutional partner with the Cleveland Clinic on education initiatives. The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formally creating this new partnership.

Last fall, Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton saw a clear need as students began to arrive on campus. Because new students have many more questions than answers, Lefton enlisted the campus community to welcome its newest members by wearing the "Ask Me" button, and becoming an on-the-spot source of information. He understands that today's students -- while accustomed to the benefits of ever-present technology – can still benefit from a human connection as they began their college journey.

Members of the Kent State University community gathered Sept. 13 to celebrate the opening of the new Kent State University Math Emporium, a state-of-the-art computerized learning center designed to help students learn math. Located on the second floor of the Kent State University Library, the Math Emporium launched this fall with the start of classes on Aug. 29.

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro, joined by Kent State University Board of Trustees, today named the The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State an Ohio Center of Excellence in Cultural and Societal Transformation.

On Sept. 3, the Kent State University Golden Flashes football team takes the field in Alabama for the season opener against the Crimson Tide. Setting aside the rivalry, a group of five members of the Kent State community are making an earlier trip to Alabama to help with relief efforts caused by a devastating tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa on April 27.

Once again this year, Portage Park District, Kent Parks and Recreation and Kent State University are collaborating on the Crooked River Adventure Race Series, which consists of three adventure races taking place throughout Portage County this summer and fall.

Rain, lightning, turnovers and penalties put a damper on Kent State's home opener Saturday night as the Golden Flashes fell to Louisiana 20-12 at Dix Stadium. In the first half, the Flashes were plagued by nine penalties for 90 yards and a pair of costly turnovers, creating a 17-7 deficit at the break. The Kent State defense kept the game within reach, but two more second half turnovers kept the offense from picking up any momentum.
