Events

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication hosts a variety of lectures, workshops, events and activities throughout the year. No matter what your affiliation with JMC, there's something for everyone!

You are probably most familiar with these signature JMC events:

The Poynter Kent State Media Ethics Workshop

The Poynter Workshop is an annual daylong ethics training program hosted by The Poynter Institute and Kent State University's Media Law Center for Ethics and Access of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Mark your calendars for the fall workshop scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18. This year's topic is "Data Minefields?"

High-profile industry leaders explain and debate current issues in media ethics. The workshop includes panel discussions, Q&As, debate and more. In addition to a live audience of more than 150 attendees, the workshop is streamed live on several websites to include a national audience. The workshop promotes participation in-person, online and via live-blogging. The 2013 topic was "That's Entertainment?".

Robert G. McGruder Awards and Lecture

The Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity lecture has become one of Kent State's most successful diversity events.

The 2013 event marked 10 years of honoring diversity excellence. The award recognizes the accomplishments of media professionals who encourage diversity in the field of journalism. The event is co-sponsored each spring by Kent State's School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The 11th annual event is scheduled for Spring 2014.

The late Robert G. McGruder was a 1963 graduate of Kent State and a foundational local figure for diversity in journalism. He went on from Kent State to become the first black editor of the Daily Kent Stater and first black reporter at The Plain Dealer. He was also the first black president of the Associated Press Managing Editors group and the first black editor of the Detroit Free Press, in 1995 and 1996.

2013 Winners

Russ Mitchell, managing editor of evening news and lead anchor of the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on WKYC Channel 3 News in Cleveland, was named the 2013 winner of the Robert G. McGruder Award for Diversity.

Betty Lin-Fisher, an 18-year veteran of the Akron Beacon Journal, was named the 2013 Diversity in Media Distinguished Leadership Award winner. She is the first Asian-American to be acknowledged with this award.
