Society of Professional Journalists Recognizes Kent State With Two National Honors

Posted Jun. 2, 2014

Kent State has won two finalist placements in the national Society of Professional Journalists The Burr(SPJ) 2013 Mark of Excellence Awards:  the Burr’s “The KSU Bucket List” issue (November 2013) for Best Student Magazine, and JMC senior Brian Smith’s “Piling On” for Best Sports Photography.

Both were also first-place winners in SPJ’s region 4 competition, which made them eligible to compete nationally. Kent State earned six first-place awards and nine finalist placements in region 4 competition. SPJ’s region 4 comprises Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and parts of western Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh.

The SPJ notes that its Mark of Excellence awards “honor the best in student journalism. As such, judges were directed to choose only those entries which they felt were outstanding work worthy of a national honor.”

The list of all SPJ 2013 national winners is available here.
