Mitch McKenney

Associate Professor

Mitch teaches at the Stark Campus and advises the student media newsroom in Kent. He joined the KSU faculty in 2008 following an 18-year career at the Akron Beacon Journal, The Palm Beach Post and the Times-Union in Rochester, N.Y.

He teaches courses such as Newswriting, Print Beat Reporting and Media Power & Culture, and co-teaches (with Kent Campus Professor Gary Hanson) the award-winning International Storytelling course that has taken students to China, India, Brazil and Estonia to produce multimedia stories.

He previously co-led the Stark Campus' H.W. Hoover initiative in environmental media, a cross-disciplinary project with multimedia courses, speakers and research on the region’s watersheds.

His research explores issues the challenges newsroom managers face online, including how to handle story comments, credibility of news sites and how to uphold narrative newswriting and other features staples. He also has conducted research in environmental media, international reporting and watchdog issues such as public records access.

He joined the KSU faculty in 2008 following an 18-year career in news, including a decade at the Akron Beacon Journal and Ohio.com, most of which he spent supervising reporters as features editor and deputy metro editor. He previously was a reporter and editor for The Palm Beach Post in southern Florida and at the Times-Union in Rochester, N.Y. He began teaching part-time in JMC in 2001.

In 2013 he spent a month as a visiting professor of journalism at Shanghai International Studies University in China.
