The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University will be the most relevant, student-centered and ethically driven accredited program in the country.
We provide our students with a solid academic experience that balances both conceptual and practical courses, professional opportunities and multiple internships, all of which are grounded in a foundation of ethics in a diverse and global society.

JMC is the only school of journalism and communication in Northeast Ohio accredited by Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC).
Accreditation matters. It signifies that a program meets rigorous national standards for excellence, as evaluated by peers and practitioners in the field.
“Accreditation is an assurance of quality in professional education in journalism and mass communications. Students in an accredited program can expect to find a challenging curriculum, appropriate resources and facilities, and a competent faculty. Accredited programs may offer scholarships, internships, competitive prizes, and other activities unavailable in non-accredited programs. Accredited programs in journalism and mass communications offer the assurance that they have been evaluated by academic peers and leading practitioners and have met the tests of the nine standards.” (ACEJMC)
With more than 800 undergrads and nearly 300 graduate students, there is no typical JMC student.
Some of our students are “family firsts” – the first person in their families to attend college. Some are second-, third- or fourth-generation Kent Staters. Some love film, others express themselves with photography. Some are passionate about strategic communication – engaging the public, persuading, motivating, transforming. The diversity of our student body makes our School stronger and more successful.
Our students are born storytellers … aspiring professionals with big plans for the future … cool, creative types who are ready to launch.
Independent. Innovative. Downright interesting. JMC students live up to these qualities and more. That’s why you belong here.
