Wellness - OneWellU Programs

OneWellU is Kent State University's wellness program that officially launched in 2006. This wellness initiative provides employees with university wide programs and activities that will enhance their individual well-being and productivity.

FlashFit MOVChallenge: Students vs. Faculty/Staff

The Division of Human Resources and the Department of Recreational Services are excited to present the FlashFit MOVChallenge, a student vs. faculty/staff 90-day competition. Participants will use a MOVband (a wrist-worn monitor) to track their daily activity and movement. They then sync their MOVband data on the challenge website. Participants in each group who meet the monthly goals will be eligible for prize drawings at the 30, 60 and 90 day marks. The ultimate FlashFit MOVChallenge winner will be announced at the end of the competition. A traveling “Golden Arm” trophy will be awarded to the winning group!

The FlashFit MOVChallenge begins Feb. 1 and runs through May 1. Faculty and staff can register for the challenge and obtain their MOVband (if one has not been previously received) through completing all of the required registration steps at Faculty/Staff FlashFit Registration. Students can register for the challenge and purchase their MOVband by visiting the Pro Shop at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Free Fridays at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center

The Department of Recreational Services at Kent State University is excited to announce Free Fridays at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) for faculty and staff on select dates this winter. The promotion is open to all part-time and full-time faculty and staff of Kent State University. Free Fridays will be offered every Friday from Jan. 16 through Feb. 27, 2015.

Now Accepting Applications for Wellness Ambassadors

Do you see yourself as a role model for health and wellness within your department?

If so, then you should apply to become a Wellness Ambassador!

Wellness Ambassadors promote university-sponsored wellness programs and activities that encourage good health and improve the quality of life, while serving as a liaison between department/regional campuses, the wellness advisory committee, and/or the wellness coordinator.

The ultimate goal of a Wellness Ambassador is to engage fellow employees at the local level to participate in wellness programs and activities.  Increasing engagement can be done by expressing wellness opportunities to fellow departmental employees, sharing ideas for new opportunities, and being available for any questions employees may have concerning their participation in programs.

OneWellU Winter Walking Program

January 12 – March 22, 2015

The OneWellU walking program can help you to keep on track with your physical activity goals. The walking program for the winter session will last 10 weeks, and can be done on your own time. All steps count, so while increasing your exercise is important, focus on your everyday activity options like taking the stairs and walking to your destination instead of driving.

New participants will receive a pedometer, if requested. Any step tracking device may be used, such as MOVbands, Fitbits, etc. All participants will log their daily steps using the American Heart Association (AHA) Activity Tracker.

Throughout the 10-week program, participants can be entered into a weekly prize drawing.

·    Weeks 1-2: Employees must track 49,000 steps each week (average 7,000 steps/day)

·    Weeks 3-6: Employees must track at least 56,000 steps each week (average of 8,000 steps/day)

·    Weeks 7-10: Employees must track at least 70,000 steps each week (average of 10,000 steps/day)

A participant may only win the weekly prize on one occasion throughout the duration of the 10-week walking program. The participant with the most steps tracked at the end of the 10-week program, will win a choice of $100 iTunes or Dicks Sporting Goods gift cards.* 

Participants will receive weekly reminders to log their steps, top 5 standings, and health tips will be provided.

Registration is required for the walking program, and can be completed by clicking HERE.

If you have NOT previously registered for the American Heart Association Activity Tracker, you must also register on the AHA website to track your total steps.  Instructions for completing this step can be found HERE.

Wellness Webinar - "Shedding Light on Seasonal Affective Disorder" - Noon - 1 p.m.

Seasonal affective disorder, sometimes known as the “winter blues”, is a common phenomenon during the winter months.  Shorter, colder days, lack of sunshine, and holiday stress can all play a role in the development of seasonal affective disorder.  This presentation will discuss symptoms, causes and risk factors of seasonal affective disorder.  But, perhaps more importantly, what you can do about it; lifestyle adjustments, as well as treatments for seasonal affective disorder will be highlighted.

Making the Most of Your Paycheck – Heer Hall 107, Noon-1 p.m.

This workshop will help participants to learn how to identify financial goals and develop a plan to reach them. It will include worksheets that participants can use in their daily lives. Tracking spending, prioritizing expenses, and incorporating goals into one's everyday spending plan will be discussed. This session will help you with the following:

  • Goal setting - getting what you want
  • Developing a spending plan that matches your paycheck
  • Identify what is important to you and your family
  • Find ways to save money

Presented by: Victor Russell, Certified Financial Counselor

Faculty/Staff Exercise Program

This program is specifically designed to assist those individuals who may  benefit from a more structured and personal exercise program due to a sedentary  lifestyle (not currently participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate  physical activity three days/week for at least three months) or for individuals  who may have some risk factors that require more supervision, such as  hypertension, diabetes, family history of heart or coronary disease, metabolic  disease, etc.  Visit the Faculty/Staff Exercise Program page for more information.


  Weight Watchers at Work

As part of the OneWellU program, Kent State University offers the convenience of attending Weight Watchers at Work meetings during your lunch time.

The Weight Watchers at Work program will hold its weekly meetings every Wednesdays from noon – 1 p.m. in the Kent State Student Center, Room 303 (location is subject to change- notices will be posted).

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the program and experience a weekly meeting without any commitment. There is a discount for Kent State employees who enroll in either of the two weight loss offerings listed below:

Weight Watchers meetings with Monthly Pass is a good choice for employees at any Kent State campus who want to try Weight Watchers but do not want a lengthy commitment. The monthly pass gives you greater control and flexibility to determine what works best with your schedule. You can attend an "at work" meeting or take advantage of unlimited access to meetings in your community. You will also be able to use e-tools to track weight, find great recipes and more. The monthly cost for a pass is $39.95, which is discounted from the price you would pay if you enrolled at a community meeting.

  • Kent State University Field House 

Faculty and staff are eligible to use the Field House indoor track for walking and/or jogging. The membership fee is $35 per semester or $60 for a year. Additional information and membership application can be found here.
  • Student Recreation & Wellness Center
Faculty and staff can take advantage of an indoor walking track, pool, fitness equipment, and much more with a membership plan. Special offers for faculty and staff, as well as programming details can be found on the Department of Recreational Services membership web page.
