Sushma Parab

Postdoctoral Research Assoc

I am working as a full time Postdoctoral Research Associate on the project entitled "Water Quality and Paleoenvironmental Research Program"  in a variety of environmental specialties to study harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their historical record in Lake Erie and other large water bodies. This includes to develop protocols to extract and measure phytoplankton pigments and accessory pigments from water and sediment samples by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) to characterize changes in phytoplankton abundance and composition on the basis of organic biogeomarkers. This work is a part of  water quality and paeloenvironmental research program designed to integrate modern process studies and laboratory measurements by VNIR derivative spectroscopy with remote sensing and down-core sedimentological and geochemical analyses.

My fields of specialization include:

  • Algal Bloom/Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)
  • Taxonomy of the phytoplankton by microscopy and chemotaxonomy
  • Primary Productivity
  • Processing and application of Ocean Colour data for ocean processes
  • Algal cultures for matching field signatures of HAB
  • Study of estuarine systems especially the impact of monsoons on biogeochemistry
