Stipulations Governing Athletic Grant-in-Aid Awards

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Kent State University recommended to the Student Financial Aid Office that you receive an Athletic Grant-in-Aid in accordance with the rules of Kent State University, the Mid-American Conference, and the provisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. This award is made as a result of your participation in a particular sport and will be applied toward your academic expenses. This award requires you to enroll as a full-time student at the Kent Campus of Kent State University.

The stipulations concerning this award are as follows:

1. Your athletic grant-in-aid cannot exceed the maximum value stated for your residency designation. The maximum value of an Athletic Grant-in-Aid for 2014-2015is $22,164 for Ohio residents and $30,124 for out-of-state students.The amount of your Athletic Grant-in-Aid may vary due to your tuition rate, room rate, board rate, or because you were provided with a partial Athletic Grant-in-Aid award from the Athletic Department. If you choose to live off-campus, the institution may pay you an amount that is equivalent to a standard meal plan to assist you with off-campus living expenses.
2. Your athletic grant-in-aid renewal is based on 16 credit hours of tuition per semester (Fall2014 and Spring 2015),a standard double room (students will be responsible for additional charges if they choose to live in a more expensive room), board plan, and books.
3. If it is necessary to revise the amount of your Athletic Grant-in-Aid you will be notified in writing.
4. It is permissible for you to receive other non-countable financial aid to meet the difference between your Cost of Attendance and your Athletic Grant-in-Aid. In the event that your financial aid exceeds the Cost of Attendance, the Student Financial Aid Office will reduce the Athletic Grant-in-Aid so as not to exceed the Cost of Attendance.
5. Federal, state, institutional, or outside grants, scholarships, and employment awarded to you will be applied toward educational expenses and could replace a portion of your Athletic Grant-in-Aid to meet NCAA and Mid-American Conference regulations. The Student Financial Aid Office will monitor all aid and allow permissible exceptions in accordance with NCAA regulations.
6. If you plan to work either on or off-campus during the academic year, you must meet with a Compliance Office staff member, to discuss the employment and to complete the employment form.
7. The Athletic Grant-in-Aid may be reduced or canceled if you:
  a.   Leave school prior to the end of the award period.
  b.   Render yourself ineligible for intercollegiate competition.
  c.   Fraudulently misrepresent any information on your application, the letter of intent, or other University documents.
  d,   Engage in serious misconduct warranting a substantial disciplinary penalty.
  e.   Voluntarily withdraw from participation in the sport for personal reasons.
  f.   Sign a professional contract for your sport.
  g.   Accept money for playing in an athletic contest.
  h.   Agree to be represented by an agent and/or accept money or benefits from such an individual.
  i.   Receive any other countable aid or employment that causes you to exceed your individual limit.
  j.   Miss an excessive number of classes during a semester or the academic year.
  k.   Exhaust athletic eligibility and graduate with a degree at the end of your final semester.
  l.   Enroll in courses and do not reside in the locale of Kent State University.
  m.   Violate Kent State Student-Athlete Handbook policy.
8. The Athletic Grant-in-Aid will cannot be reduced or canceled during the 2014-2015 academic year on the basis of your athletic ability, performance, or contribution to your team's success.
9. The Athletic Grant-in-Aid can be issued for minimum of one semester and a maximum of one academic year Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters. The renewal of this award for the 2015-2016 academic year is not automatic and will be determined by the Athletic Department at a later date. You will be notified no later than July 1, 2015 as to whether or not the Athletic Grant-in-Aid will be awarded, reduced, or cancelled for the 2015-2016 academic year.
10. 10. While participating in organized practice or competition, you will be under the supervision of a member of the coaching staff and will be covered by a medical insurance plan. Under no circumstances will your aid be discontinued during the 2014-2015 academic year because of injuries sustained in the Intercollegiate Athletic program. Likewise, it is not permissible for the Athletic Department to assure a student-athlete that their Athletic Grant-in-Aid will be renewed for the 2015-2016 academic year in the event of an injury.
11. MAC Intra-Conference Transfer Policy (Amended Jan. 28, 2013)

After signing this Mid-American Conference Letter of Intent for one MAC institution or affiliate member, should the signing student-athlete elect to transfer to another Conference member institution or affiliate member and desire to compete in intercollegiate competition, the following restrictions apply:

  1.   The student-athlete may not receive athletically related financial aid from the second MAC institution or aid granted through the intervention of athletic related interests during the initial academic year of transfer (i.e. first two semesters) Revised January 29, 2013.
  2.   The student-athlete will lose one of four seasons of competition.
  3.   The student-athlete is required to fulfill a year in residency at the second institution.

12. By accepting this Athletic Grant-in-Aid, you agree to the above stipulations regarding your award. If you have any questions about your award, you are encouraged to contact your coach; Marc Johnson, Assistant Director; or Anissa Strickland, Associate Director of Student Financial Aid.

How to accept or decline your Athletic Grant-in-Aid:
  • Login to your FlashLine Account at
  • Select the My Account tab at the top of the page
  • Under Financial Aid, choose Financial Aid Awards – view, accept or decline
  • Choose 2014-2015 Award Year from the drop-down menu and click the Submit button
  • Click on the Accept Award Offer tab
  • If you agree to the terms and conditions outlined in the Stipulations Governing Athletic-Grant-in-Aid Awards (see above) and you will attend Kent State University, choose Accept from the drop-down menu
  • If you do not agree to the terms and conditions outlined in the Stipulations Governing Athletic-Grant-in-Aid Awards (see above) or you will not attend Kent State University, choose Decline from the drop-down menu
You must accept or decline each Athletic Grant-in-Aid award separately. Your Athletic Grant-in-Aid will not credit to your Bursar Account until you have accepted the award. Once you have made your selection, you cannot go back and change your response. Please contact the Student Financial Aid Office if you need to change your answer.

Outside Resources
Student athletes who will receive an outside scholarship, grant, or other resource that will assist them in paying their education related expenses (tuition, room, board, books, travel, miscellaneous and personal expenses) must report that information annually to the Student Financial Aid Office. You do not need to include gifts from friends, relatives, or scholarships that were awarded to you by Kent State University.
