Creative Writing

Creative writing is one of the most popular areas of study at Kent State's Department of English. Students begin with Introduction to Creative Writing and proceed through the Fiction and Poetry Writing Courses:

Introduction to Creative Writing Eng20021 This course provides practice in various forms of creative writing with some emphasis on student interests and on sources of creativity.Theme and focus vary by section, so students should consult individual section descriptions, which are available outside the Department of English office, 113 Satterfield Hall. This course may be used in partial fulfillment of the Writing Minor and is the prerequisite for upper division Poetry Writing and Fiction Writing courses. Prerequisites: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in Eng11011 or equivalent.

Fiction Writing I Eng30067 This course provides practice in advanced writing of fiction, with specific models and discussion of student work on a weekly basis. This course may be used in partial fulfillment of the Writing and Language Studies requirement in the English Major and in partial fulfillment of the Writing Minor. Prerequisites: Completion Eng21011 College Writing II (or equivalent) and Eng20021 Introduction to Creative Writing. Other requirements vary by section: check the Schedule of Classes for other prerequisites.

Fiction Writing II Eng30068 This course provides continued practice in advanced writing of fiction, with specific models and critical discussion of student work on a weekly basis. This course may be used in partial fulfillment of the Writing and Language Studies requirement in the English Major and in partial fulfillment of the Writing Minor. Prerequisites: Completion of Eng21011 College Writing II (or equivalent), Eng20021 Introduction to Creative Writing, and Eng30067 Fiction Writing I. Other requirements vary by section: check the Schedule of Classes for other prerequisites.

Poetry Writing I Eng30069 This course provides practice in advanced writing of poetry, with specific models and critical discussion of student work on a weekly basis. This course may be used in partial fulfillment of the Writing and Language Studies requirement in the English Major and in partial fulfillment of the Writing Minor. Prerequisites: Completion Eng21011 College Writing I (or equivalent) and Eng20021 Introduction to Creative Writing.
