Professional Activities

Denise A. Seachrist, interim dean and chief administrative officer at Kent State University at Stark, was recently inducted as the president of the Communal Studies Association. The mission of the CSA is to encourage and facilitate the preservation, restoration and public interpretation of America's historic communal sites. The organization provides a forum for the study of intentional communities, past and present. The association communicates to the general public the successful ideas from, and lessons learned by, communal societies.

Founded in 1975 as the National Historic Communal Societies Association, the CSA has expanded its focus in recent years to include the study of contemporary and international communal societies.

Seachrist has previously served on the CSA's board as the vice president and as the newsletter editor. She will serve a two-year term as president.

Virginia Dressler and Joe Corall, both from University Libraries, presented "Gearing Up for Fedora 4" at the International Conference, Hydra Connect in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 1, 2014.

Summary: The poster gave an overview of how our team has custom mapped our SQL data from digital collections into RDF using the tool D2RQ. This will lay the framework for the migration plan in the works to move the digital collections to a new platform.

Don A. Wicks, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Informing Spirituality" at the Information Seeking in Context Conference in Leeds, England, on Sept. 2-5, 2014.

Summary: Wicks presented a position statement and participated at the panel discussion. His presentation focused on research at the intersections of religion/spirituality. Delegates from more than a dozen countries attended.

Paul Fehrmann, University Libraries, and Edith Sicken, Kent State graduate student, presented "Using Systematic Review Methods for Topics in Philosophical and Theoretical Psychology" at the Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, American Psychological Association Division 24 in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 2014.

Virginia Dressler, University Libraries, presented "Applying Concepts of Lined Data to Local Digital Collections to Enhance Access and Searchability" at the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Initiatives in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 10, 2014.

Summary: Poster addresses the potential of adding concepts of Linked Data to existing digital collections to further enhance access and discoverability. This will highlight the RDF framework in the open source platform, Fedora 4, which will enable this work.

Elizabeth Richardson and Cindy Kristoff, both from University Libraries, presented "Scanning Our Needs and Options: How Selecting an Overhead Scanner for ILL was a Team Effort " at the 2014 ILLiad International Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in March 2014.

Summary: With an aging overhead scanner that would no longer be covered under the vendor’s service contract, our ILL department was in the market for a new scanner. Determining our needs and evaluating our potential choices became a team effort involving everybody.

Meghan Harper, School of Library and Information Science, authored "Collaboration of School and Public Libraries: Finding Common Ground with the Common Core to Serve Students with Special Needs," Ohio Media Spectrum, Vol. 66, Issue 1, (2014).

Robert Stadulis, professor emeritus at Foundations, Leadership and Administration, Angela Neal-Barnett, Department of Psychology, and Kent State graduate students Mary MacCracken and Lisa Fender-Scarr authored “Social Physique Anxiety in Early Adolescent Black Females,” Comprehensive Psychology, Vol. 3 (2014), 12p.
