Kent State Student Wins Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Study in ItalyPosted Dec. 9, 2013 | Navjot Grewal
Terell Wilson, a Kent State University at Stark student, has been awarded a prestigious $4,000 Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to study abroad. Wilson is majoring in applied communication with a minor in interpersonal communication, and will study in Florence, Italy, during the spring semester.
The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, provides grants for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two- or four-year college or university to participate in education-abroad and intern-abroad programs worldwide.
The scholarship program has a goal to diversify the students who study abroad, as well as the countries and regions where they study.
“The Gilman Scholarship has granted me the opportunity to see the world outside of America and to be in a different culture far away from home,” says Wilson. “I plan to reach out to young adults in and around my community regarding the importance of furthering their education and possibly studying abroad, which definitely has the ability to positively alter one’s life. While overseas, I will represent not only Kent State, but the U.S. as well.”
“A Kent State student getting a scholarship in this reputable program is a great achievement,” says Ediz Kaykayoglu, assistant director for education-abroad programs at Kent State’s Office of Global Education. “It is a great success that one of our Regional Campus students has been granted this scholarship.”
