Student Involvement

Students are strongly encouraged to become involved in student organizations, and the community.  This involvement builds leadership skills and networking opportunities, which are highly valuable job skills.

Community Involvement Opportunities:

Volunteering for community organizations provides students with a great opportunities for networking within the service industry.  Students are also able to gain experience in different organizations and working with different populations in order to find a career that best fits their interests.  Whether you are able to commit a few hours a week, or a few hours a month, volunteering provides countless benefits to everyone involved!  Listed below are a few area agencies students can gain volunteer experience:

Catholic Social Services - Actively serves the poor and those in need through a variety of programs.

Children's Hunger Alliance - Statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of childhood hunger.

Family and Community Services of Portage County - Provides services ranging from domestic violence, homelessness and emergency services to residents of Portage County.

Hattie Larlham - A nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities and improving the lives of more than 1,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio.

Hospice Foundation of America - Provides comfort and support to patients and their families when a life limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments.

Independence of Portage County - Offers a comprehensive array of residential and support services to adults with developmental disabilities.

Miller Community House (Family and Community Services of Portage Co.) - Provide emergency shelter to those adults and children in a housing crisis, while also providing support, advocacy, and referrals to encourage self-sufficiency and movement to permanent housing.

Portage Learning Center - The mission of Portage Learning Centers Head Start is to foster the parent's role as the principle influence on the child's development through comprehensive services and community resource partnerships.

Safer Futures (Family and Community Services of Portage Co.) - Organization dedicated to lessening the scope of domestic violence in Portage County.

Townhall II - Promotes the health, wellness, and recovery of individuals and communities through prevention, education, advocacy, intervention, and treatment.
