Description

The Master of Education in Health Education and Promotion enables graduates to pursue their diverse interests in the field while addressing competencies essential to professional development. Students are encouraged to pursue Health Education Specialist certification (CHES/MCHES). 

The M.Ed. in Health Education and Promotion consists of two concentrations: Community Health and School Health Licensure.

Community Health provides background for those who will be involved in positions of leadership in a wide variety of health-related community settings as well as for those who will proceed to doctoral work in fields related to health education and health promotion.

School Health Licensure enables graduates to teach health in schools or pursue diverse interests in the field.  Competencies essential to school health education are addressed.

The Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion prepares students for leadership roles in academia and community or school settings. Health Education borrows from many disciplines, including community organization, education, medicine, biological science, psychology, statistics and communication. Graduates work in schools, higher education, government agencies, hospitals and non-profit agencies.

Admission Requirements

M.Ed: Official transcript(s), goal statement and two letters of recommendation. Admission into the School Health Licensure concentration also requires current Ohio teaching license.

Ph.D: Official transcript(s), master's degree from an accredited institution, recommended minimum graduate GPA of 3.500, GRE (with a recommended score of 50th percentile), goal statement, two letters of recommendation, resume or vita, and interview.

The Health Education and Promotion program will assess its applicants holistically, considering academic credentials, related professional experience, academic or professional references, scholarly activities and professional activities, among others.

Graduation Requirements

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree requires a minimum of 32 semester hours of graduate coursework including at least 16 semester hours at the 60000 level or above. A major consisting of 18 or more semester hours in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services is required. M.Ed. students have six years from the term of first enrollment to complete the degree.

The M.Ed. in Health Education in Promotion is 35-36 semester hours.

Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation):
Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass specific assessments in order to apply for licensure. Students should consult their advisors for specific program requirements and refer to the Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type.

After admission to the Ph.D. degree program, students plan a program of study with their respective faculty advisory committee headed by their advisor. Students’ programs may include at least one appropriate graduate-level minor or cognate as well as the major.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of tthis program will be able to:

  1. Assess needs, assets, and capacity for HED.
  2. Plan health education and promotion activities.
  3. Implement health education and promotion programs.
  4. Conduct program evaluation and research in HED.
  5. Serve as Health Education resource person.
  6. Administer and manage HED.
  7. Communicate and advocate for health and HED.
