Description

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision provides advanced level preparation for counselors in various public and private human service and mental health settings as well as preparing individuals for the counselor education professoriate in colleges and universities.

Admission Requirements

Official transcript(s), minimum 3.500 graduate GPA, GRE scores with a recommended score of 50th percentile or higher, two letters of recommendation, goal statement, interview, supplemental form, completion of the Questions Regarding Legal and Ethical Issues form, preliminary written exam and resume or vita.

Graduation Requirements

After admission to the Ph.D. degree program, students plan a program of study with their respective faculty advisory committee. Please refer to the program and college doctoral handbook for more information about requirements for graduation.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge from study pertaining to: a.) theories related to the principles and practices of counseling, career development group work, systems, and consultation; b.) theories and practices of supervision; c.) theory and methods relevant to counselor education; and d) pedagogy relevant to current social and cultural issues including social change theory and advocacy action planning. 
  2. Demonstrate design and implementation of quantitative and qualitative research and methodology. 
  3. Demonstrate models and methods of assessment and use of data. 
  4. Demonstrate understanding of ethical and legal considerations in counselor education and supervision (e.g. the ACA Code of Ethics). 
  5. Demonstrate a specific focus on the knowledge and skill/practice in the following areas, which is an integral part of the CES doctoral program: Counselor supervision, teaching/pedagogy of counselor education, research/scholarship, advanced counseling theory and techniques, leadership and advocacy and professional identity as a counselor. 
Thesis/ Dissertation

Dissertation research is the culminating experience in the doctoral Counselor Education and Supervision program and successful completion of the dissertation process is required for graduation.
