Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Teaching English as a Second Language is grounded in linguistic principles, language learning theory and empirical research on language learning and teaching. It enables students to teach effectively in varied learning contexts. Students gain experience through supervised practica and have the opportunity to teach in a variety of English-as-a-second/foreign-language contexts. Graduates are prepared for international teaching, adult education and literacy positions. 

The M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language with the TESL Education concentration meets the above goals, while also preparing students as P-12 school teachers. Practica take place in schools, and students have the opportunity to teach in a variety of contexts. 

Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation):
Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass specific assessments in order to apply for licensure. Students should consult their advisors for specific program requirements and refer to the See Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type.

Admission Requirements

Official transcript(s); domestic applicants submit the GRE (general test) and international applicants submit the TOEFL; three letters of recommendation and a 1-2 page statement of purpose. For more information about graduate admissions, please visit the Graduate Studies website.

Graduation Requirements

The M.A. TESL degree requires 36 credits of coursework and students complete a capstone project with options of a 1) thesis, or 2) portfolio or exams.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate their understanding of different associated fields within TESL, including linguistics, language acquisition, pedagogy and practice.
  2. Demonstrate what they know about the field and disciplines making up TESL.
  3. Demonstrate their skills in teaching.
  4. Demonstrate their understanding of different cultural norms and practices and their ability to accommodate teaching practices based on these differences.
Thesis/ Dissertation

Students must complete a capstone project with options of a 1) thesis, or 2) portfolio or exams.
