Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Latin consists of two concentrations: Literature and Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy.

The concentration in Literature is intended for those who wish to increase their knowledge of literature and culture along with their command of the language.

The concentration in Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy is intended primarily for students who wish to teach in elementary and secondary schools or beginning and intermediate levels of post-secondary study, and to increase their effectiveness as teachers.

Students are encouraged to enroll in study-abroad programs (limit 6 hours) and in specialized workshops in advanced language or pedagogy (limit 4 hours). Departmental permission must be obtained before enrolling in such programs.

Admission Requirements

Official transcript(s), goal statement, three letters of recommendation and a 5-10 page writing sample in English (research paper or essay), which should be accompanied by a signed declaration that the sample is original work and that the applicant received no help in its preparation.

Graduation Requirements

Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy: Students must successfully complete 36 semester hours of coursework and a final project, a portfolio, or a comprehensive examination. Additionally, students will complete an exit oral interview and an exit essay examination. Course requirements include LAT 61001 Research and Writing, LAT 66211 Latin Prose Composition, CLAS 51402 Roman Archaeology and Art, CLAS 51006 Roman History and two electives. 

Within the concentration, students must successfully complete MCLS 60661 Second Language Acquisition, MCLS 60698 Research in Second Language Pedagogy, MCLS 63038 Teaching Literature and Culture, MCLS 60663 Second Language Curriculum and Testing and two electives. 

Literature: Students must successfully complete 36 semester hours of coursework plus a thesis or final project. A minimum of 12 semester hours must be courses in Latin language and literature.

Students may combine a graduate major in Latin with a minor in another field with the approval of the adviser by completing the core requirements pus one additional Latin  course and 12 semester hours in another language or department. A graduate student majoring in another field may elect a minor in Latin by successfully  completing 12 semester hours in Latin.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

Literature

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skills in Latin composition, Latin comprehension, the analysis of Latin literature, and understanding of the Roman cultural context within which Latin literature was produced.
  2. Read Latin proficiently and demonstrate general knowledge of the literature, history and culture of Roman civilization.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between ancient and modern cultural values, recognize historical biases, and use primary source materials to better understand the culture of ancient Rome. 

Applied Linguistics and Pedagogy

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skills in the analysis of Latin literature
  2. Read Latin proficiently and demonstrate general knowledge of the literature, history and culture of Roman civilization. 
  3. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge of second language acquisition and linguistics. 
  4. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and applied skills in the teaching and assessment of outcomes for second language learners.
