Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Teaching English as a Second Language trains students to teach effectively while drawing on a solid theoretical foundation. Students gain relevant experience through supervised practica and have the opportunity to teach in a variety of English-as-a-second/foreign-language contexts. Graduates are prepared for national literacy and adult education programs and international teaching positions.

Students gain relevant experience through supervised practicums and have the opportunity to teach in a variety of English-as-a-second/foreign-language contexts. Graduates are prepared for national literacy and adult education programs and international teaching positions.

Admission Requirements

Official transcript(s); domestic applicants submit the GRE (general test) and international applicants submit the TOEFL; three letters of recommendation and a 1-2 page statement of purpose. Please refer to the University policy for graduate admissions.

Graduation Requirements

The M.A. TESL degree requires 36 credits of coursework and students complete a capstone project with options of a 1) thesis, or 2) portfolio or exams.

Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation):
Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass specific assessments in order to apply for licensure. Students should consult their advisors for specific program requirements and refer to the See Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

1. Demonstrate their understanding of different associated fields within TESL, including linguistics, language acquisition, pedagogy and practice.

2. Demonstrate what they know about the field and disciplines making up TESL.

3. Demonstrate their skills in teaching.

4. Demonstrate their understanding of about different cultural norms and practices, and their ability to accommodate teaching practices based on these differences.

Thesis/ Dissertation

Students must complete a capstone project with options of a 1) thesis, or 2) portfolio or exams.
