Description

The Associate of Applied Science in Engineering of Information Technology provides students with a core of engineering-related courses and a focus on digital/electronic systems, robotics, microsystems, fiber optics, network engineering and electronic communications. Skills obtained in this program prepare students for positions dealing with designing and troubleshooting information acquisition, storage, processing, conversion, transmission and display systems. Computer support specialists provide help and advice to people and organizations using computer software or equipment. Some, called computer network support specialists, support information technology (IT0 employees within their organization. Others, called computer user support specialists, assist non-IT users who are having computer problems.This major is available at the Tuscarawas Campus. Requirements articulate with the Bachelor of science in Engineering Technology degree.

Career Opportunities

They also work closely with electrical and electronics engineers and computer hardware engineers in the computer systems design services industry. Demand is expected to be high for technicians in this industry as computer and electronics systems become more integrated. For example. computer, cellular phone, and global positioning systems (GPS) technologies are being included in automobiles and various portable and household electronics systems. From 2010 to 2020, Ohio is projected to create 498,100 new jobs. The number of jobs is expected to increase from 5.368 million in 2010 to 5.867 million in 2020, a 9.3 percent increase.

Information obtained from the Bureau of labor statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for time period from 2006 to 2016 states that even with an increase in outsourcing, government figures indicate a robust job growth for many technology occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a student of this program with a few years of experience can expect to earn an average wage of $25.66 per hour. National estimates for Electrical/Electronics related technicians employed were 144,460 with 5.3% employed in Semiconductor and other electronic components manufacturing, 3.86% in Communications Equipment manufacturing, 2.79% in Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments manufacturing, 2.67% in Computer and Peripheral Equipment manufacturing, 2.59% in Pipeline Transportation of Crude Oil; a smaller percentage of 0.38% are employed by Federal Executive branches, gas extraction, petroleum industries. These engineers are employed in every state, in small and large cities and in rural areas. Some branches of engineers are concentrated in particular industries and geographic areas and some move from place to place to work on different projects. The majority of these engineers were employed in Ohio, Virginia, New York, Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona and California.

 

Admission Requirements

Admission is open to anyone with a high school diploma or its equivalent.
 

Graduation Requirements

Minimum 71 credit hours. Minimum 2.000 cumulative GPA and in major.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

1. Demonstrate entry level engineering related skills in digital and electronic systems.

2. Demonstrate comprehensive skills in robotics, micro-systems, fiber optics, network engineering and electronic communications.

3. Demonstrate: a. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to a various areas of Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology;  b. an ability to design and conduct experiments and to critically analyze and interpret data;  c. an ability to use modern engineering tools and techniques to design and test systems in response to user requirements particularly in the Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology field;  d. an ability to function in a multi-disciplinary team.

4. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of professional Engineering and ethical responsibilities.

5. Demonstrate an ability for effective oral, graphic and written communication.
