Laura Schuch

Doctoral Student
As a doctoral student and Research Assistant, my interests can broadly be described as health geography, social epidemiology and geospatial technologies, with a passion for social and environmental justice.  Building on a Masters in Public Health, I focus on understanding how a person's address, neighborhood, community, etc., affects his or her health and well-being.  Research often investigates one environmental condition (such as lead exposure) or health condition (such as asthma) in isolation.  This eliminates the ability to draw connections and understand additive or synergistic affects.  I attempt to push towards a holistic model. I believe this vein of research requires the use of mixed-methods which elucidate context and individual experience.  Therefore, I am interested in using geospatial technology (GIS) in traditional and novel ways to capture lived experience and environmental conditions using geonarratives, spatial video, qualitative GIS, and web mapping.  When used in conjunction with existing data, such as property records and health outcomes, connections may be made that may not have been evident before.
