Profile Detail

Laura Schuch

I am currently beginning my first year in the PhD program in Geography but have previously completed one year in the doctoral program in the College of Public Health (Epidemiology).  I have a Bachelor of Arts in Geography (Environmental concentration/ Cartography minor) and a Master of Public Health (Environmental Health Sciences), both from Kent State University.  Before returning to graduate school I worked for several years as a GIS Specialist and Data Technician at an environmental consulting firm and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. My research interests can be broadly described by health disparities, political ecology, environmental justice issues, and environmental perception.  More specifically, I am interested in understanding barriers to seeking health care experienced by under-served populations.  I would like to explore what hinders an individual from seeking care or complying with orders given by a health care professional by investigating individual perceptions of spaces and places. Other topics include the health effects of a resource-based economy on maternal health and fetal outcomes in Appalachia, and the interaction/ relationships between people and water.
