Carla Owens

Associate Director

As the Associate Director for Career Education, I supervise our career counseling staff, manage our Career Resource Library, and most importantly help students and alumni discover their life's passions and then secure gainful employment. As the Liaison to the College of Education, Health, and Human Services I coordinate our Teacher Interview Day each spring.

I earned my BA in Business Management from Westminster College, and MA in Counseling from the University of Akron.  In addition, I am also a Certified Myers Briggs Interpreter.

How I Got Here

As many students, I was clueless about what I wanted to do with my business degree. As a result, I randomly interviewed and was not able to convey clear career goals. Needing to begin paying on student loans, I resorted to a job as a cook at a gourmet health food store and restaurant. After just two days I was promoted to sous chef and then later pastry chef. It was an amazing experience but after 2+ years I realized that I no longer dreamt of opening my own bistro. Now what to do? After some intense soul searching, I set my goals on helping others realize their calling in life. I have been with Career Services since 1995. I think it's fair to say that I have definitely found my professional purpose!

Most Unusual Job Held

While working for an inventory company, I counted anything and everything: nails and screws, greeting cards (the paper cuts!), groceries, you name it! After just 2 months I quit because I was a failure at it!

About Me

I am an ESFP personality who loves the outdoors, animals, gardening, the ocean, dark chocolate and Thai food. My favorite exercises are hiking, swimming and yoga and I strive to eat organic when possible. My hobbies include gourmet cooking, jewelry design, scouring Ebay for unique finds, volunteering at church, traveling, buying shoes, interesting conversation and adventures, staying at B & Bs, and did I tell you that I adore gardening?

Best Advice for Students

Concentrate on selecting a career rather than a major first. Lastly, the career chosen should not be considered a "life sentence." It often serves as a stepping stone to many other paths.
