Originally from Seoul, Korea, Young Kim is a Fashion Designer, an Educator, and an Interdisciplinary Artist. She began her undergraduate studies in the Fashion Design Department at Parsons The New School for Design, and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, majoring in Fashion Design.
Prior to her teaching career, Young has held positions such as assistant designer and overseas production manager for Women’s RTW and Bridge line companies. While completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Chicago, she began illustrating for Chicago Social, a magazine, and local bridal design houses. Upon completion of her degree, she began teaching Fashion Design at a design school in Chicago in 2003, and became the department’s head instructor in 2007. She then began her graduate studies at Columbia College Chicago in the Interdisciplinary Arts Program where she was involved in a series of installation art; incorporating textile, visual, audio, written, and performing arts. While in Chicago, she also served as a scholarship committee co-chair for Chicago Fashion Foundation, bringing Chicago’s fashion industry together through competitions, lectures, and workshops. Young’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Chicago, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago during a theatrical play Round n’ Round by Curious Theater Branch, and at a numerous Fashion Shows.
As an educator, her strength lies in curriculum building through research and field studies. Young has presented internationally peer-reviewed and judged teaching papers and wearable design projects. She brings a broad range of domestic and international networks as a result of her professional and personal backgrounds. Young is an Active Member of International Textiles and Apparel Association, a member of The Luxury Marketing Council and also serves on the Membership Committee of Fashion Group International as an Executive Member. She aspires to grow and connect designers and artists; to each other, to companies, and to schools.
In addition, she maintains her professional and creative practices. She is an experienced dressmaker and a corsetiere, with fluency in draping and drafting as well as a creative retail consultant to many retailers.
