Dear alumni and friends,

I’m thrilled to be writing to you today with tremendous news about Kent State: The institution has been named one of the top 200 universities in the world by The Times newspaper in London. Considered “the gold standard for world-class research institutions,” the 2010-2011 World University Rankings place us in distinct company. We are the only public research university in Northeast Ohio to receive the honor, joining Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati as the only Ohio schools on the list.

This ranking comes on the heels of the 2011 U.S. News Best Colleges report, in which Kent State earned a coveted spot on the first-tier list of Best National Universities. Recognition in these esteemed publications affirms what our closest supporters have known for some time: Kent State is on the rise, and now competes globally in the realm of higher education. We have become a leading choice for exceptional students, scholars, and academic and strategic partners.

Just look at the statistics during this historic Centennial year: Record-breaking enrollment for four straight semesters. The largest applicant pool in our 100-year history. Our highest year ever for federally funded research. More than $218 million committed so far to the Centennial Campaign.

Collectively, these achievements are a concrete measure that our bold Excellence Agenda, with its focus on student success and academic innovation, is attaining its ambitious vision. And they are a definitive sign that Kent State has arrived to take its standing among a remarkable group of peers — while putting in place the foundation to soar even higher.

There is much more to come as we begin our next 100 years. I encourage you to stay current with all of the exciting developments at Kent State by regularly visiting
