CS & Math System / Network Outages

Posted Jan. 7, 2010

As previously planned, the dedicated air conditioner in the CS / Math Machine Room is being replaced, which is causing disruptions in the department's systems and networks. Our system staff also found "zinc whiskers" underneath the raised floor system, which need to be cleaned before the new AC can be turned on.

The emergency machine room cleaning is scheduled to start at 7am on Saturday January 9 and be completed  by 5pm on Tuesday January 12. While the cleaning is in progress ALL equipment must be removed from the machine room or turned off to avoid damage. As a result there will be NO access to departmental servers from anywhere, and also no access to the Internet from the Mathematics and Computer Science Building. Note that this means that the Flashzone access will also be unavailable from the building.

Machines in offices and research labs may still be used, but their access will be limited to files stored locally on the machines. There will be no access to files on the departmental servers, or to the Internet. If you wish to work during this period, please transfer any necessary files to your office or home machines before 7am on Saturday.

Assuming that environmental conditions permit, following agreement with University Network Services, we will attempt to turn on the the network and servers during limited times during the above cleaning period. At the moment these periods are planned from 6pm Sunday January 10 until 7am Monday January 11, and from 6pm Monday January 11 until 7am Tuesday January 12.  During these periods access to the Internet, limited departmental servers and email should be available.

After the cleaning is complete, the process of moving equipment back into the machine room and establishing network connectivity is expected to take two days, and so should be completed by Friday January 15. Note that due to the considerable loss of equipment, it may not be possible to restablish full operation of all equipment by that time.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the cleaning process is absolutely essential to restoring normal operations.
