Application Requirements for the Master of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design

Applications must be submitted online through the Kent State University Graduate Admissions website:

In addition to Kent State University general requirements (minimum GPA = 3.20 for the MSAED), admission to the program is administered through the CAED Graduate Studies Committee and is based on:
  • Statement of Purpose and Outline of Proposed Course of Study
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Original Transcripts from colleges previously attended
  • Undergraduate GPA
  • GRE Scores
  • Letters of Reference
  • Portfolio of Research and Design Work

Statement of Purpose and Outline of Proposed Course of Study:

Applicants to the Master of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design (MSAED) must submit a two page Statement of Purpose and Proposal of Study. The two pages must include educational and career goals, research interests and a proposed course of study. If you have questions about this application requirement, please contact the MSAED Coordinator (contact information below).

Graduate Record Examinations:

For information on the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), please check: Scores above 151(460) verbal reasoning, 150 (620) quantitative reasoning and 4.25 analytical writing will give an applicant good chances of admission.

Letters of Recommendation:

Submit letters of recommendation completed by persons who are familiar with your academic record, accomplishments, your character, your educational goals and ability to achieve them (minimum of 3 recommendations required at least two of which are from professors who have taught or supervised the applicant in an academic setting). The format is the Recommendation Form, which can be downloaded from the Graduate Studies Forms Library and optionally a letter.

Portfolio of Research and Design Work:

This portfolio represents a record of the applicants’ experiences in conducting research in any research endeavor. It contains examples of academic or professional product in a written, presented, or design work formats. In either format, the research product clearly demonstrates applicant’s aptitude for research. Submitting research papers or reports, presentations, or design work is not sufficient by itself. The committee needs to see a description of the projects, types of research conducted, facilities, and the role of the applicant in a multi-author project or paper. The portfolio may be submitted as a single PDF formatted 8 1/2x11 or A4 file not exceeding 3 Megabytes in size. The suggested document structure is as follows:
  1. Title page: This page includes the applicant’s name, program of interest, and a title of the portfolio
  2. Table of contents: It is preferred if the items are linked to the referred document
  3. A page in front of every submitted document describing the context of research and the role of the applicant
  4. The document itself (papers, reports, design projects, grants, etc.)
